Challenge

Finding the balance.

It was important to recognize and sometimes play into the stereotypical visual style that is associated with communes but at the same time make sure that the publication felt trustworthy and modern.

Solution

Whole Earth Catalog; welcome to  2020.

A lot of visual cues were taken from the Whole Earth Catalog*; the type, the black and white printing. At the same time, the layout was simplified and became bold and graphic. The publication used different color stocks of paper to help with differentiating sections and as a way to bring in color while still acknowledging the grassroots nature.

*The Whole Earth Catalog was an American counterculture magazine and product catalog that was published in between 1968 and 1972, it is what connected people living in communes to new technology and techniques associated with communal living.
